Canthopexy vs. Canthoplasty: Understanding the Differences

When you notice that someone has beautiful, cat-like eyes, you’re seeing a positive canthal tilt. This occurs when the outer corners of the eyes are slightly higher than the inside corners, giving the eyes a lifted look. Unfortunately, genetic factors, aging, sun damage, and even poor lifestyle habits can damage the lower lids’ supporting tissues, leading to drooping eyes (and a negative canthal tilt).

Today, Tampa Bay patients can address drooping eyes with aesthetic procedures, like canthopexy and canthoplasty. In this article, we’ll explore the differences between these procedures to help you determine the right option for your needs.

What’s the Difference Between Canthopexy and Canthoplasty?

Canthopexy and canthoplasty are both surgical procedures that involve strengthening the lateral canthal tendon at the outer corner of the eye, creating an uplifted, youthful appearance. Both procedures can be used to address a drooping lower lid, sagging lower lid tissue, and a negative canthal tilt.

However, canthoplasty is a slightly more extensive procedure. To the patient, the experience is likely very similar.

Tampa canthopexies have more subtle results.
